80-Year-Old Woman Sets Record Hiking Appalachian Trail: True Grit & Inspiration! (2026)

At 80 years old, Betty Kellenberger defied expectations and set a new record, becoming the oldest woman to conquer the challenging 2,193-mile Appalachian Trail. Her journey began with a lifelong dream, as she had always envisioned hiking the 14-state path from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. However, life's responsibilities got in the way, and it wasn't until after retirement and a stint as a county commissioner that she finally decided to pursue her passion.

Kellenberger's determination led her to become a 'thru-hiker,' aiming to complete the trail within 12 non-consecutive months. She embarked on her first attempt in 2022, meeting fellow hiker Joe Cox along the way. Their journey took an unexpected turn when they decided to tackle Katahdin Mountain before the snow, but Cox's trip ended abruptly due to a fall. Undeterred, Kellenberger continued, only to be halted by Lyme disease three days later.

In 2023, she tried again, starting from Harpers Ferry and heading north. Unfortunately, a fall led to knee surgery, forcing her to take a break. During her recovery, she trained by climbing stairs in the hospital, and in 2024, she embarked on her third attempt, heading south from Harpers Ferry. Despite the challenges, she persevered, reaching Hurricane Helene before being pulled off the trail by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

In 2025, Kellenberger made her final push, starting in Damascus, Virginia, and hoofing her way to Springer Mountain. She then flew north to complete the northern portion of the trail, carrying a lightweight backpack of around 30 pounds due to her petite frame. Her determination paid off, and on September 12, 2025, she claimed victory, becoming the oldest woman to complete the Appalachian Trail.

Kellenberger's achievement was celebrated by the town, which honored her by naming a local hiking path the Kellenberger Trail. She now inspires seniors to stay active, emphasizing the positive impact of movement on overall well-being. Despite the bears and moose she encountered (one of which she saw in a zoo!), her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the joy of pursuing one's dreams, no matter the age.
