Attention! New Traffic Rule: License Suspension for Repeated Violations
The Pune Divisional Commissioner, Chandrakant Pulkundwar, has introduced a stringent measure to enhance road safety following a devastating accident that claimed eight lives. The incident, involving a speeding truck that crashed into multiple vehicles at the Navale Bridge, prompted the authorities to take decisive action. The new rule allows traffic police to suspend licenses for road users who repeatedly break traffic rules, with three violations being the threshold for suspension.
The commissioner's instructions also emphasize the need for better road safety management across all agencies. He has tasked the SaveLife Foundation, an NGO, with identifying accident-prone zones between the Katraj Tunnel and the Navale Bridge, with a report expected in a few weeks. Government authorities will also review the situation.
The commissioner further stressed the importance of enforcing basic traffic rules in Pune, particularly for two-wheeler users who often fail to wear helmets. Despite attempts to enforce helmet use, citizens protested, highlighting the challenge of ensuring public compliance. To address this, the traffic police have been empowered to penalize and suspend licenses for reckless riders, while also requesting additional manpower for effective rule enforcement.
The PMRDA, on the other hand, will focus on identifying high-risk areas. This comprehensive approach aims to significantly reduce accident rates and enhance road safety in Pune.
