Fresh off the heels of Zigbee 4.0 and its new Suzi sub-gigahertz sub-brand, Matter 1.5 is making waves by introducing expanded support for a variety of devices. This includes soil sensors, 'closures' (like window shades and garage doors), and, most notably, cameras.
"Matter 1.5 introduces one of the most anticipated additions to the specification: cameras," explains the Alliance. This means developers can now create and certify cameras that seamlessly work with Matter-enabled ecosystems, eliminating the need for custom APIs or complex integrations. Imagine the convenience of having all your smart home devices, including your cameras, working together flawlessly, regardless of the brand! Matter 1.5 empowers device makers to build cameras with interoperability while still allowing them to innovate through their own apps and services. This gives consumers greater flexibility in choosing from a wide range of camera types and price points, all contributing to a cohesive home experience.
But here's where it gets interesting: the new standard introduces cross-vendor support for smart cameras using WebRTC. This technology enables live video and audio streaming, two-way communication, and remote access through STUN and TURN protocols. You can expect features like multi-stream configurations, pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) controls, customizable detection and privacy zones, and various storage options, including both local and cloud storage. It's essentially everything you'd want from a smart camera platform, without being locked into a single vendor's ecosystem.
Matter-certified cameras will leverage the established WebRTC technology, allowing for live video and audio streaming, two-way communication, and both local and remote access via standard STUN and TURN protocols. The specification also includes support for multi-stream configurations, pan-tilt-zoom controls, detection and privacy zones, and integration with vendor-provided storage options, such as continuous or event-based recording to local or cloud destinations. The specification accommodates a wide array of camera types, including doorbell cameras and baby monitors, with support for Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Power-over-Ethernet (PoE). The Alliance also states that Matter 1.5 is backwards-compatible with "most modern cameras," provided they have sufficient processing power, memory, and connectivity. However, it will be up to individual vendors to decide which of their existing devices to upgrade and put through the certification process.
In addition to the exciting camera features, Matter 1.5 also enhances support for the new device category of "closures." This category encompasses devices like window shades, drapes, awnings, gates, and garage doors. The Alliance has adopted a simplified "modular cluster" design approach that uses "a small set of building blocks." This approach aims to reduce development complexity and improve position and status reporting for these devices.
And that's not all! Matter 1.5 also incorporates support for soil sensors, which can measure moisture levels and, optionally, temperature. This opens the door to seamless integration with automated irrigation systems. Furthermore, the new standard improves energy management capabilities, enabling devices to share information about energy pricing, tariffs, and grid carbon intensity for automated demand management. This extends to electric vehicles, with support for state-of-charge reporting and bi-directional charging.
