The Unexpected Comeback: Why CDs are Trending Again (2026)

CDs are making a comeback in the holiday shopping season, as Gen Z embraces a 'retro renaissance'.

The resurgence of compact discs is fueled by a wave of 90s nostalgia and highly anticipated 'deluxe' releases from renowned artists like Taylor Swift and Pink Floyd. This trend is a stark contrast to the vinyl revival, as CD players and compact discs find their way back onto Christmas wish lists.

The demand for CDs peaked in the mid-2000s, but many households ditched their CD collections as digital music gained popularity. However, the distinctive whirring sound is now making a comeback, with retailers and marketplaces witnessing a renewed interest in vintage tech and music for playback.

John Lewis has expanded its CD player range to meet the rising demand, reporting a 74% sales increase in the past year. Heather Andrews, an electricals buyer at John Lewis, notes, 'We're witnessing a retro renaissance.'

The resurgence of classic 90s acts like Oasis and Pulp, who dominated the CD era and filled stadiums this summer, is also contributing to the CD's comeback. Despite the majority of music sales occurring through streaming, experts observe a growing demand for physical copies, complete with artwork and liner notes, allowing fans to appreciate the music more deeply.

CD sales reached their peak in 2004, with 162 million units sold, featuring hits from artists like the Scissor Sisters and Robbie Williams. However, the subsequent years witnessed a rapid decline, with only 10.5 million sold in 2024, according to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Neil Gibbons, the COO of Key Production Group, a manufacturer of vinyl, CDs, and cassettes, notes a 15% year-on-year increase in CD orders. He attributes this to the format's resilience, drawing parallels to the vinyl market's previous decline. Gibbons highlights the growing importance of physical music among young Britons, particularly Gen Z, who have surpassed other generations in CD purchases in the past year.

The poll reveals that nearly half (46%) of Gen Alpha are listening to physical music, including CDs, and over half of this age group know how to use a CD player, a technology they've adopted from previous generations. Physical music releases are gaining prominence, influencing official chart results.

Taylor Swift released four CD editions of 'The Life of a Showgirl,' priced at £12, making them more affordable than the vinyl version. Sam Fender's 'People Watching' and Pink Floyd's 50th-anniversary box set, 'Wish You Were Here,' featuring two CDs, cater to superfans with deeper pockets.

While CDs are perceived to offer a richer sound compared to digital streaming, sales continue to decline, albeit at a slower rate, as music buyers reassess the format. The affordability of CDs, ranging from £10 to £11, makes them a cost-effective alternative to vinyl.

Additionally, Britons are exploring secondhand music options, with eBay UK's general manager, Eve Williams, noting an increase in CD searches as people seek to complement their digital collections with 'more personal forms of collecting.'

The secondhand CD market is thriving, with MusicMagpie's data revealing the top 20 bestselling secondhand CDs of 2025, including classics from artists like Abba, Adele, The Beatles, Oasis, and Tina Turner.
