Get ready, cricket fans! The West Indies are shaking things up as they gear up to face New Zealand in a three-Test series next month. This series promises to be a thrilling contest! Cricket West Indies has just unveiled its squad of 15 players for the matches scheduled between December 1 and 21, with games in Christchurch, Wellington, and Mt Maunganui.
The biggest headline? The return of veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach, who's played a staggering 85 Test matches! This move is set to strengthen a relatively inexperienced fast-bowling lineup, also featuring a debut call-up for Ojay Shields. Roach, at 37 years old, last played a Test match back in January during the Pakistan tour in Multan.
Unfortunately, Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph are still recovering from injuries they sustained earlier this year and won't be part of the series.
Shields and Roach were among several players who participated in a two-week high-performance camp in Antigua, specifically designed to prepare for the New Zealand series. The playing surfaces in New Zealand are known to favor pace bowlers, so this preparation is crucial.
Also returning to the squad is Kavem Hodge, who has previously shown success against pace bowling. Khary Pierre, on the other hand, has been left out, as spin-bowling is not expected to play a significant role in this series.
Windies director of cricket, Miles Bascombe, emphasized the challenges of touring New Zealand, stating, “New Zealand has traditionally been one of the toughest places for any touring side, which is why strong emphasis has been placed on targeted preparation.”
He further added, “The recent high-performance camp here in Antigua was designed to replicate, as closely as possible, the conditions we expect to face, particularly the pace-friendly surfaces.” Bascombe is optimistic, noting that the team is well-prepared, with several squad members already in New Zealand for the white-ball portion of the tour.
