The New York Yankees are making moves! In a surprising turn of events, they've re-signed a familiar face: Paul Blackburn.
On January 15th, 2026, the Yankees confirmed the signing, but the story began months earlier. Back on December 21st, 2025, Jon Heyman of the New York Post broke the news that the Yankees were bringing back the 32-year-old right-hander on a one-year, $2 million deal. And here's where it gets intriguing: the contract includes performance incentives that could earn Blackburn an additional $500,000.
Blackburn's journey to this contract is a rollercoaster. He joined the Yankees after being released by the Mets in August, where he made a brief but impactful appearance. In eight outings, he struck out more than a batter per inning but also posted a 5.28 ERA. Interestingly, Blackburn, primarily a starter throughout his career, was utilized solely as a reliever by the Yankees.
His debut with the Yankees was less than ideal, giving up seven earned runs in just 3 1/3 innings. But he turned things around quickly, allowing only two earned runs in his next 12 innings. This bounce-back ability is a testament to his resilience.
Blackburn's career began with the Athletics, where he spent seven years as a reliable back-end rotation piece, occasionally showcasing above-average performance. The Mets acquired him in a minor trade in 2024, but he struggled in his five starts with the team. Injuries plagued Blackburn heading into the 2025 season, causing him to miss the first few months.
Now, the contract incentives raise an interesting question: could Blackburn be in the running for a rotation spot? He receives $100K for reaching 80 innings, and the same for each 10-inning increment up to 120 innings. With a somewhat flexible rotation behind Max Fried and Cam Schlittler, and with Luis Gil, Will Warren, and Ryan Yarbrough likely rounding out the staff, there might just be an opportunity for Blackburn to reclaim his starting role. And this is the part most fans are curious about: will he get the chance to start again?
The Yankees' rotation is further complicated by the recovery of Carlos Rodon, Gerrit Cole, and Clarke Schmidt. But with the right opportunities, Blackburn could be a valuable asset. What do you think? Is this a smart move by the Yankees, or is there another player you'd rather see in that rotation spot? Share your thoughts in the comments!
